For new families / 6th grade

A Day in
the Life

Moving from elementary to middle school is a big jump. Here is exactly how a PHMS 6th grade day works — from drop-off to dismissal.

During the 1st week of school, our entire staff and PTSA representation will assist 6th graders with their acclimation to middle school.

01

Scheduling

6th Grade students are assigned to 6 classes each day and divided into A days and B days. English, Math, and Science are each day (both A days and B days). The student will have 3 more classes on A days and 3 different classes on B days made up of requirements and electives. We always encourage students to only bring the supplies and resources they will need for that particular day of instruction.

02

Arrival Procedures

6th Grade bus riding students will be dropped off in the Lee St. parking area using the right lane of the parking lot; personal vehicle transported students can be dropped off on the left side of the Lee St. parking area OR on Pine St. in front of the campus OR on Colonial Street in the parking lot. Students may not arrive earlier than 8am, with the first bell ringing at 8:35am and the tardy bell ringing at 8:42am.

03

6th Grade Meeting Area

Each morning, 6th grade students should report to the school cafeteria where they will be directed to sit in designated areas. Breakfast will be available for students every morning. After the 1st Bell, 6th grade students will be dismissed from the cafeteria to their 1st period class.

04

Class Structure

Each period of instruction consists of 63 minutes. Students will have 4 minutes between classes to transition to the next assigned location.

05

Lunch Procedures

6th Grade students, with very few exceptions, will transition to the cafeteria for lunch after the first three instructional periods of the day. PHMS staff will monitor transitional lunch traffic. This 1st Lunch Period is from 12:06pm – 12:36pm. We require all parents to make lunch arrangements in advance. We are prohibited from accepting lunches to give to students and we strive not to interrupt instruction with food deliveries.

06

After Lunch

The fourth, fifth, and sixth periods of the day follow lunch. Students are supervised at all moments during lunch and during their transition to each class.

07

Departure Procedures

Students are released from their 6th period class at 4:00pm. Bus transported students will report to the sidewalk along the Lee St. parking area. Car transported students will be picked up on Pine St.
